An isolation tank is a lightless, soundproof tank in which subjects float in salinated water at skin temperature. They were first used by John C. Lilly[1] in 1954 in order to test the effects of sensory deprivation. Such tanks[2] are now also used for meditation and relaxation and in alternative medicine. Isolation tanks were originally called sensory deprivation tanks. Other synonyms for isolation tank include float tank, floating tank, floater tank, flotation tank, REST tank, flotation baths, John C. Lilly tank and sensory attenuation tank.

Sensory deprivation/isolation/floatation tanks sound fantastic. The basic idea is that you seal yourself off from outside input (no light, no sound) and float in the water so that you're deprived of a majority of your sensory information. People use the time floating in there to think deeply or relax, and most people (3/4) report more positive outcomes/attitudes after a session.

I first heard about them when reading Richard Feynman's "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman!" and it turned me on to the idea; unfortunately, the nearest one is a couple hours away.
