Already had a few threads on system options but turns out I can mak a big change.

Looks like I will be able to remove my back seat and go with a larger system. 02 2500 Quad Cab. Space that I can install in is 60"(w) x 32"(h) x 20"(d). 32"(h) will keep everything under the rear window and 20"(d) will give me about 3" behind the seats.

I want to use that space for:

Box - 36"(w) x 32"(h) x 20"(d)

Amp rack - 24"(w)

Mount x-overs (components)

fuses and distro block

Second battery

I have been reading through the threads and may consider a ported box. However, I have no exp with ported enclosures. Everything I have done is all sealed.

So why should I go ported? Subs and amps are up in the air but with the specs above what would be best for that box size.

Metal and Rap mostly - looking for sql (total system power @ 2000 wrms)

thanks

With 11.26ft3 before any displacements you have a ton of options.

Ported will normally render a "louder" level of bass and with proper tuning and air space will produce a very clean and quality sound(depending on drivers).

Basics...you get louder quicker and easier with a ported enclosure...if built and tuned properly it will sound great as well.

As for product..that falls on budgeting more then anything. You have a TON of room.

I normally run 75% of peak power to my sub/subs in a sealed box built to manuf specs. Will I need to stay closer to actual rms when going ported?

Is there a particular sub size that performs better in a ported enclosure? Not wanting to debate cone area vs power on this - (but talking sq) would a single ported sub sound better than mutiple ported subs?

Say if I had a choice of:

3 maybe 4 low end but quality -10"s

2 or 3 hi end - 12"s

1 super woofer 15" or 2 mid range 15"s or even 3 low end but quality 15"s

all ported and with their recommended rms power.

Again, keeping sq in mind (but still being able to get lots of spl on rap) what would be the best way to go and staying at 2000rms? 2000rms is about all I can go on my elec sys.

How much of a factor will Xmax have when dealing with ported enclosures? And what is tuning at a certain freq all about?

Sorry, but I dont have much of a budget until I understand more about ported enclosures and tuning? However, I have priced a sealed system and looks to be ~1500. Deck, 2 sets components, 2 amps, 2 18's, wire, rca, and a second yellow top. Most of the cost is tied up in the subs and mono amp so I wanted to look at all the options before I decided on this. With all the talk on ported, thought I should at least learn what its all about.

Thanks again

If it helps in choosing the right sub set up, I am looking at the following:

Components (5.25 set and 6.5 set):

Boston

JBL or Infinity (mainly because they are 2 ohm)

Lanzar Opti

Cerwin Vega

Amps for the comps:

Boston 4ch

Elemental 4ch

Hifonics 4ch

Autotek 4ch

Amp for the sub:

Undecided until I know howmany subs to run

As you can tell I like the Boston stuff and really like SPG555. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/cat_m94_i58_boston-acoustics-13---18--and-other-subwoofer-sizes.html

Mainly for the ease of recone and voice coil replacement. Again, no particular budget and dont really have to use all of the space listed above.

If I were to go with 2 SPG555 ported (that would be in my power requirements) how would it compare to two sealed?

Thanks

what is your desired output on the substage? Are you looking for ungodly loud, or more daily and digging down deep for crushing lows?

Also, any idea why size you would like to do? I'm thinking like a 4 12s would be on my list..lol but then again I like to go huge. Also, if you have a budget you would like to stay under that changes everything as well. Pricing can change how much and what size you go with as well as what type of power you would be limited to.

If you like digging down and want good output...try the Skar 12 and run like 3 or 4 ported and have a good amount of space left if you want to go larger.

Yea, looking for daily with crushig lows.

I have had 4 Type R 12's sealed on 2000w rms then went to 2 PG Titanium sealed and now a single JL15w0 (I think) sealed on 250rms.

I was ready to go with 2 18's sealed. I was even considering running a single xxx12" sealed. Not set on any size or number of subs. If I had to choose then 3 15's sealed and mount the amps and x-overs somewhere else.

So what ported set up on 2000rms would you choose over 3 15's sealed @ 2000rms? Staying with the 36x32x20 ported box.

I would say try ported man. I bet you will never go back. I would do 2 15s ported. You will be amazed I'm telling you. If you would have ported those PG TI subs you would still have them LOL.

It was a sad day when the TI's burnt. If I could find another set I would run those ported. I did check out PG website and they do have a TI sub. Not sure if it is on par with what I had or not though. The sub looks good but cant find them on-line and I will NOT buy from local shops. (Crooks)

Anyway, I think I will try a ported enclosure. Worst case - I swap back to sealed.

Any idea when Mach5 website will be back up?
