Hello everyone,

I'm planning on investing in some subs this summer. I have a 04 civic. I did have kicker speakers in my old car, and I hear the subs can BOOM pretty well, so I was thinking about getting a pair of those. I was looking for probably 2-10'' for now. I listen to rap/hip-hop along with some rock and alternative every once in awhile. My buddy does have a pair of 10s in his car, and I like them, but I don't think 12's would be too bad.

Now there's already enclosed on bestbuy.com such as (had links, but can't post cause new member):

Kicker - Solo-Baric L5 10" Dual-Voice-Coil 4-Ohm Subwoofers with Enclosure

or

Kicker - 12" Dual 2-Ohm Subwoofers with Enclosure

Now I've seen the Kicker Comps before, and reviews seem pretty good. But the 10'' L5's? i can't find anything on them, but I really like the style of them, and I think they are in a smaller box. So if anyone can offer any advice if this is a good route or not to take, please respond. Other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

(Getting to the amp is next after finding the subs)

(P.S. trying to keep the subs under $300)

You are not going to find many on this board that will recommend either Kicker speakers or Pre-Fab boxes

If you have heard them and are happy with how they sound then make you own decision.

My last truck had 2 - Kicker 12" L7's in a prefab box with a 1000 watt of JL Audio powering them.

They were very loud, but I would not have that set-up again as it never sounded that great.

Are Pre-Fab boxes the boxes you can buy in stores? Like the ones without anything in them? or just the ones with everything already in them (like the two above)?

What are a brand of speakers that do sound good? I guess I never really heard a "good sounding" system because no one around where I live really have them. Or if they do, they got a big system with like 4-8 subs, but I never checked them out.

Is there any brands or anything you could recommend to look at? or where to start?

There's a lot of subs out there better than Kicker. Look up Sundown Audio, Fi, DC, many many more for your budget. I'm thinking about 2 12" DC level 2's. They are $155 a piece but everything i hear about them is awesome.

As far as boxes go, some people on here like Ram_Designs can design you the prefect box for $1. If you're skilled you can build the box from their design, or have someone build it for you.

Figure out what subs you want, then box after. You will be much happier.

yeah i mean those obsidian subs are awesome too, just keep in mind that if you want 2 12's with that much power, you might ave to upgrade your electrical. also keep in mind how much trunk space you have to work with.

I've checked out all the subs, and they all seem like they're in a good price range. Based on looks (cause that's all I'm looking at right now haha) I liked the Fi's, but they are on the expensive side of the lot. If it was between the Fi 12's or Obsidian 12's, is there much difference (besides the price)?

Also, I'm alright with building stuff on my own. Is building a correct box hard to do? I will probably check on that Ram_Designs guy for help. I'm trying to keep the box and Subs under 300 if possible.

Thanks everyone for the help so far!

Edit: Or Fi 10's. Are the box specs different for each different set of subs? I'd be nice to keep the box as small as possible.

ram_designs are more than a dollar...

Originally I was thinking about having like Bestbuy do it. But I kinda don't wanna buy a built enclosure anymore. I do feel comfortable using a saw and drill, but I don't own a router for cutting the circles, so would like the circles have to be perfect? of course I'd lay out a template on it before cutting, but it may come out a little crooked.

My budget is hopefully under $500 if possible. the lower the better.

Goals of the system is just to get some rumble going in the trunk. I like bass heavy music and I've always wanted to get some subs hooked up, but never really knew where to start. I'm not looking for the BIGGEST AND BADDEST subs on the block, but I still want my trunk to boom. Also, I'd like to keep trunk space open, so the smaller the better too, but I understand boxes take up a lot of space.

You deff don't need a router to cut the circles, you can do it with a jigsaw. It's not quite as easy but if you take your time it'll be fine. I'd recomend installing everything yourself as well. You'd prob get what you're looking for from either 10's or 12's just decide how much trunk space you can give up & take some measurements to see how large you can go on your box.
