annoying subwoofer anomaly (help!)

I recently replaced the audio system in my new cobalt. The system itself sounds great, but I am incurring a subwoofer anomaly. Whenever the head unit volume is turned to off while listening to the radio or a cd, or in the time switching between modes(radio, cd, aux.) until the receiver starts sending audio to the sub, and for the few seconds during powering up or turning off the receiver, the subwoofer kicks like once per second monotonously for no reason. As soon as the volume is turned up or the mode switch is completed(the cd starts playing for instance) the subwoofer operates completely normally. The volume of the kicking during these anomaly periods seems to be slightly variable but always loud enough to be highly annoying. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Only one thread, in one section, was necessary. No reason to post three threads in three different sections.

You can try grabbing a DMM and measure the RCA's going to the subwoofer amplifier during these periods to see if the pulsing is coming from the headunit or if it has to do solely with the amplifier.
