An IB 12 or a sealed 8?

Which is the best option for a limited space SQ sub?

I'm torn now. I had my heart set on picking up a RL-i8 or TC Sounds 1000 8 or an Epic 8, but no one is willing to sell. After browsing a couple threads, I came across James Bang's IB thread and now I'm contemplating doing an IB set-up. I was thinking of going with an Fi IB12. My purposes are SQ while being louder than my current set-up, which is a sealed 8W3v3. I'm very limited on space so I don't have many options. I could either do a IB set-up or run a sealed 8 in a box no bigger than .5 ft^3. Out of these two choices which would you recommend?

well the 8inch sealed idea is the easiest

the 12inch IB idea is the hardest, just ask James about how much work he put in his setup. cause im going to do a IB setup in my car hopefully in the next couple of months, but im going with a 12inch IDmax.

You could put 2 or 3 Sundown E8's in .5 sealed.
I like where your head is at; however, mounting them might be a bit of a pain in the box I built but I might look into that. I am very curious to see the Sundown X8 and might end up waiting till that hits the market to make my final decision.

Yeah I saw the labor intensiveness of the build. I was very interested in the responses people were giving about IB setups and feel that's more the style of bass I'm trying to generate. We'll see what kinda ideas this thread kicks up, and if I can find something to suite my needs, I feel as thought I'll be join the IB peeps.

In a car with a trunk, IB or a boxed alignment with the cone opening into the passenger compartment are your only real options for a sub that will carry significant musical content. IMO. This is more true the more acoustically sealed the trunk is. Using a box in the trunk is like putting your home theater sub in a different room - the rumble will come through, but not much subtlety.

To get the same output of the 12 in IB any 8 you will run will need about 10x the power to get a similar low end. IB configs can be the most efficient set up you can run. I had a pair of FI X series in IB and the output was unmatched and I was only running 300w to the pair at 4 ohms. Baffle needs to be SUPER solid and seal it up the best that you can and you will be one happy camper! IB will not be the loudest option but the SQ is the win!

Well I just spent most of my morning measuring the car. IB is not a possibility after further inspection. I only have 3 inches of mounting depth due to my gas tank being in the way. I guess I'll be looking into running MAYBE 2 8's or a single 10" sub.

Pic of the trunk. I'll take a better one so you can see the rear deck better later.
