Port area is not as much designed a ratio to cubic footage as it is designed around how much air the subwoofer can displace. Check out the vent mach on your boxes. Some subs simply will need/will work better with smaller or larger ports. Even though I believe the 12-16 in^2 per cube is a good starting point, take it a bit further.

What does the port matching actually do? I don't fully understand it. Other than something to do with port noise.

normally drivers with a higher xmax and stronger motor force need larger port area due to the velocity at which the air will be moving.
