Amplifier RMS question

Hey guys, just have a quick question on some RMS rating. I current have 1 Infiniti Kappa 10.1 4 ohm subm rated 350RMS http://www.crutchfield.com/S-09epXZkhwy4/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=108PER101Powered by a Profile AP1000M amp http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?search=profile+ap1000M&i=489AP1000M I am looking to add the 2nd Infiniti SUB i have, even though id still be using an entry level amp, with the 2 subs at 350RMSx2=700RMS. Would the 500RMS @ 2ohm be too underpowered? Currently i have one fully powered in a bandpass tube, would 2 slightly underpowered in a ported box still sound just as good, if not hopefully better? Thanks for any help

AH, i had originally thought the magic figure was the RMS rating, just for my own knowledge, what does contribute to a good sound, what should i look for when trying to match subs and amps.

you should match the ohm load the subs can be wired to, to the amps rms rating. for example, 2 dual 4 ohm subs can be wired down to 1 ohm, so you would look at the amps rms @ 1 ohm. 1 dual 4 ohm sub can be wired down to 2 ohms, so you would look for an amp that does close to the subs rms at 2 ohms.

AH, well thats why i supplied the links to the subs, they are SVC, 4ohm, two of them in parallel would bring the resistance down to 2 ohm, each speaker being 350rms each would calculate to be 700rms in parallel correct? so the amp which can provide 500RMS at 2ohms would be slightlyunderpowered, this is what i was tryint to convey in my first post sorry.

I am also using this very useful audio calculator

http://www.mediafire.com/?i1n1jtmhil1 havent really seen another one quite as indepth as it. Worth a look

Thanks again for all the feedback!

There is no such thing as underpowered. Get that idea out of your head. The difference of 200w between the two drivers will not be audible. You will simply generate more heat in the voicecoil (which leads to LESS power going to the subs) for no real gain in output. Those are low powered efficient subs, 500 for the pair will be plenty.

hello viewers ,

I will be powering 2 subs which will be around 1000 watts RMS each. Either Fi BL's, kickers, or just some alpines. I really like the audioque but i havent heard much about it and whether it lives up to its specs. The kicker is much more expensive but i know its a good amp. i was also looking at a Lanzar MXA252 but dont really know about it. Can I hook a mono amp up to 2 subs?

-Thanks

Make a new thread, you're more likely to get answers.
But FWIW - That's not much of an amp for a pair of legit 1000w rms subs.

Lanzar MAX - like most entry level lines - likes to advertise Peak Power numbers - which mean nothing, because there is no standard to compare them to. Peak, Max, Dynamic -- all mean different things to different companies.

When you look in the manual you'll see that the mxa252 is rated for 200w x 2 at 4 ohms stereo, or 600w x 1 at 4 ohms bridged. It's a respectable amount of power for ~$120, but no where near the advertised sales specs, and not much when you're looking for ~2000.
