I know this is kind of non traditional but this is my third install on a polaris rzr..my own. These are side by side utv atvs..in case you dont know what im talking about.
I have very little room to work with so ive chosen class D amps due to small footprint and no alternator, just a stator. I have 6.5 speakers mounted and also a custom enclosure for a 10" subwoofer.
I have installed a PPI 900.5 amp and a Kicker 10C104 and the subwoofer sounds horrible no matter what I do. I also have gotten the amp wet a few times and the power wire rubbed against the frame and did a good smoke out one day. (this is a very harsh environment that im working with..water, mud, sand..)
There are several companies that install stereos in rzrs where im from and they mostly use powerbass amps and powerbass subs..and to be honest they sound great. But all I see are negative reviews on powerbass stuff lately.
I may have got a defective kicker..or this amp may have had something wrong with it on the sub channel..but you can barely hear it unless i max out the sub channel then only on certain songs will it thump.
So regardless im going to buy a new amp anyway due to smoking the ppi..(the back channels sound great)..but the sub channel is probably fried..
Sorry to be so wordy but my application is different than most..i stay on a tight budget because of the harsh environment and am ok with a couple amps a year.
I have decided to replace the kicker with a SoundQubed HDS210
The amp that the installers want me to get is the Power Bass XMA-5670IR
but i am leaning towards the JBL GTO-5EZ
thinking about Soundstream RUB5.800 5
Why a 5 channel amp? I have 4 6.5 speakers in pods (waterproofed)..and want to run my sub separate. Amp is mounted on the roof (to keep as much water off it as i can)..so little footprint is needed.
For what its worth the powerbass systems that these guys install are very impressive..I just like to be different and do my own thing..but went against the grain with the PPI and kicker...and it never really sounded good.
Thanks
