Amp X-over or Deck X-over

I am going to ask this even though I believe I already know the answer. Should I just set the X-over on my deck and leave the amps off? The reason I ask mainly is because I don't want to blow another sub. Just last week I nuked my "D" series solo. I was running it with a PPI PC2150. Looking back I know what did. I set my Qbass cross over to a specific frequency(36Hz) and then made the crucial mistake of turning up the Qbass bass boost too high. While running through a frequency sweep I hit 36 Hz and poof!

So here I am again having just found another D series solo. I plan to go with something new sometime soon but my entire trunk install was geared around this sub(tiny box, with sub and amps flush mount in trunk floor). I lucked out and found another one and I will use it for the time being. Not wanting the kill this one I know the first thing I should do is turn down(off) the Qbass bass boost. But should I turn off my amps X-over all together. I am running my system with an Alpine 9831. It has internal high/low pass x-overs as well as a 4 band equalizer. Should I just stick with my decks X-overs and just let the amp supply the power like it is supposed to?

thanks

choose the one that is most flexible. what HU do you have? is this for the sub? if so like i said earlier, find that one that is most flexible in terms in crossover points and slopes. If they are pretty much similar, i'd go with the crossovers on the HU because you can change the pts and slopes whenever you are in the car, instead of going to trunk or under the passenger seat to change the settings on the amp.

i like using the headunit xovers. it's easier but it depends on your tastes. one isn't better then the other, it's just one may have more options then the other. also the xover didn't blow your sub. bass boost and amp clipping did

Oh, I am quite aware of that. That was the reason why I was wondering if I should just use one or the other rather than both. I have just went through a few pages of the gain setting tutorial and I think I will give it a try.
