Amp Work Half Way?

My friend bought a amp and when we were installing it he went to hook up the power wire and it made a spark. The amp still turns on and there is no blown fuses. The amp still powers the subs. I was wonder if something could have broke in the amp because of this. Would a amp still work if it was broke? And would it give out less power than it is supposed to or will it just not work at all?

fuse at the battery is the last thing to hook up. then you get no spark at the amp(s)

I'm guessing it's not as loud as he thought it would be. Is the gain set too low?
