amp woes

My friend has my second Alpine MRV-1507 and he is making payments to me on it. He had it running a svc 4 ohm kicker comp 12. It ran fine. Today he tells me he cant hear the sub. The amp comes on, the music light blinks (like its supposed to) and the protection light is green (also normal). The sub vibrates at a constant frequency, almost like engine noise, but it doesnt increase with rpm's. I said, "Well it doesn't seem like the sub is blown, as it is moving from whatever output the amp is giving it. The amp's protection light is green, which also says that the amp should be functioning correctly."

So we took the sub from the box, and it stunk like hell. It was odd... it stinks, but moves freely without any noise. Im worried that the voice coil blew and shorted something on the amp without tripping protection mode.

What do you guys think?

I couldn't find my DMM, so the coil reading is a no-go. He did, however, put another sub of the same ohm load on the amp and it did the same thing. I'm thinking he has an RCA issue, or toasted my amp.
