amp tuning/ distortion

I have 4 Hifonics ZXi 6.5C - 6-1/2" Zeus ZXI Series Components hooked to a Hifonics ZXI80.4 640W 4 channel..Im real new to this audio stuff so I need a little help..when I turn the head unit up to about 25 it gets some distortion from the 6.5's. what knobs on the amp do I need to adjust to get the distortion out? thanks

Set the gain properly. It's not a volume knob.

what head unit? make/model? factory? I assume you have RCA outputs from the HU to the amp and not a LOC?

if turn the gain down, you can turn up the head unit more, then it will distort at a higher HU volume - but it won't be any louder that it is currently.

the head unit is a kenwood KDC-BT648U and yes I am running RCA's. the amp is basically set at 0 on everything except the 2 dials on the end. (obviously new at this ) but when you adjust those 2 dials it increases the volume but causes the distortion. if both dials are turned to 0 the headunit can be on 35 and you can hardley hear anything..like theres no output. I want to get this adjusted before I hook the subs up so I can try to get a good even sound with no distortion out of the 6.5 and the tweets and all the bass from the subs.
