Amp To Power 4 Speakers

I want a 4 channel amp to power my 6x9 Kenwoods & my 5 1/4 Pioneer speakers. I have them hooked up to my Sony GT500 HU, which I just upgraded from my cheap old feature less JVC HU.

My questions are...what RMS do you think the speakers are running at now? Maybe 20 RMS per speaker? I want a cheap amp that will do just good enuff. This amp I want is only $98 and it should give me 75W RMS x 4. I just bought in the last couple months a mono amp, 2 subs, wiring kit, cap, headunit & box & dont wanna shell out another $300 plus for a 2nd amp.

I know yall dont like Sony products, but i'm not looking for an amp that'll blow my nuts off. just want to be able to turn it up a little more without clipping and/or distortion. Right now its very high pitched....point of almost making my ears bleed. I want more clear non distorted louded music with a tad more bass, plain & simple. Then I wont have to have my subs on 24/7 to please me, to gt some more bass.

Heres the specs:

Sony XM-4060GTX 480 Watt 4 Channel Xplod Amplifier

60 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms

75 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms

60 watts RMS x 2 + 150 watts RMS x 1 in 3-channel mode

4- or 3-channel output (no 2-channel operation)

Tri-way capable (Tri-Way Crossover required)

CEA-2006 compliant

MOSFET power and output stages

rear-channel high-pass/low-pass crossover (50-300 Hz, 12 dB/octave)

front-channel high-pass crossover (50-300 Hz, 12 dB/octave)

preamp- and speaker-level inputs

gold-plated connectors

variable bass boost (0-10 dB at 40 Hz)

15-3/4"W x 2-3/16"H x 10-7/8"D

Why would you think that amp would give you 75w X 4 feeding the speakers you've described? None of them are 2 Ohm speakers, are they?

Anyway - if it does 60% of its rated output then to me it would be worth $100 brand new.

And yes, that level of power, assuming it isn't too much for the speakers you're going to be driving with it, should make an appreciable difference from the 15~20 undistorted watts they might be getting currently from your HU. For the sake of argument and to err on the side of caution we'll say 15...

Im actually looking for the same thing right now man to power my Alpine R components. Apparently people here tell me my Boss amp is crap and that even though its rated at 80 rms its only producing 20 rms sooooo I have been trying to find an inexpensive amp. Anyways, after doing some research I did find a few amps im trying to get some opinions on that you may want to look at yourself. From what i hear they are both from good companies.

now from what I hear the HiFonics run better with subs and the Phoenix Gold run better with hi/mids . Any 3rd party info would be great though.

found this one too heh

Wow, that audiobahn amp has a ridiculous bridged power at 4 ohmsedit: so does that hifonics.......
The given output ratings on that Audiobahn amp are the exact same as the output ratings on the KAC-PS500F I run.

The difference being is that my amp is rated @ 12v and will actually output that level of wattage (and then some) whereas that Audiobahn is rated for that output @ 14.4v and still won't quite do it in a real-world application. The Intake-series 'Bahn amps leave something to be desired more often than not //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

DaveDSMer ~ The Octane-series PG amps proved time and time again to be more than a bit problematic as far as reliabity and overall build quality are concerned so that's something to keep in mind while shopping around.

I know less than nothing about that HiFonics amp so I cannot comment on that one.

Of the three you've chosen I'd likely go with the PG amp and make certain you keep the receipt in case you have to utilize the SE 1-year warranty.

Thanks for your input Prowler.... Trying to find a good amp on a limited budget proves to quite a challenge. My next companies to look at are kicker and alpine but they are a bit more expensive.. sigh...

sorry, should have gave more info.

The 2 Kenwood 6x9s:

Kenwood 6x9" 3-Way Coaxial Car Speakers

Model: KFC-6903IE

350W Peak

150W RMS

The 2 Pioneer 5 1/4s:

Pioneer 5-1/4" 2-Way Speakers

Model: TS-G1341R

130W Peak

25W Nominal Power

My goto suggestion for reliable power on a tight budget is usually Profile.

Not great amp by any means ~ meaning they'll never be mistaken for the stuff being manufactured by Arc, Tru, DLS, or the like but they're worth (imo) the price you pay for them.

Additionally, if warranty is of any great import to you, all Profile amps purchased through Crutchfield carry a 3-year warranty in place of the 1-year warranty Profile's amps carry if bought from any other authorized reseller.

I'm not certain why the warranty is better through Crutchfield than it would be elsewhere but there it is nonetheless.

Take the Profile AP1040 4-channel at Crutchfield, for instance. Rated for 80w X 4 @ 4 Ohm stereo and after factoring in Profile's historic tendency to overrate their amps somewhat I'd wager you could reasonably expect to actually get 65 or 70w per channel RMS out of it.

Priced @ $150 and then shipping for items at that price I think is $11 or $12 so you're looking at $162/shipped for more than 60w/channel RMS brand new in the box with a valid 3-year warranty. Not too bad, really.

Jroc ~ you're not going to want to put much power at all into those Pioneer coaxials as they simply aren't designed for it. And I'd also wager you'll want to HP crossover those fairly high b/c if they are the coaxs I'm thinking of they do not like being asked to reproduce much lower than 120Hz or so ever.

Actually its free shipping above 125 bucks or so on car stuff from them but thats not the point lol. First time ive heard of Profile so ill have to look into that, thanks for the link there. Such a headache trying to make the right choices when it comes to car audio i tell ya.

Do you think that 60W RMS for that sony amp is way over rated? You think about 70W RMS is the limit I could put on those 4 speakers? I found that same amp u recommended for $90 on millionbuy. My price limit for the amp would be about $150 or less(counting tax/shipping) On that link u gave me to crutchfield it says shipping on that amp is free. So that amp is in my price range. I could save up for months and buy like a $500 amp, but I dont think its worth it for a few more watts or whatever.

Thanks for all the help.

You're right about the free shipping. I forgot about that. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/thumbsup.gif.3287b36ca96645a13a43aff531f37f02.gif

I think you wouldn't want to put more than about 35 or so into your Pioneer speakers, to tell the truth. If those Kenwoods are rated @ 150w RMS then I would wager that's how much they'll safely accept give or take a few watts.

However, for that level of speakers 70w or so should get them moving just fine. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I have no doubts that the Profile amps are available elsewhere online cheaper than Crutchfield has them listed for. The only reason I linked to Crutchfield was because you'd know the warranty would be honored no questions asked (Crutchfield arguably has the best customer service of any electronics e-tailer out there past or present) and it would be in effect for 3 years as opposed to 1.

However, if those things are of no great import to you and not worth the extra expense incurred then by all means by it elsewhere if you can find it cheaper! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Can't be mad atcha for wanting to save some coin, for sure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Would you think it'd be better to just get a 2 channel amp & hook that to the 6x9s & leave the 5 1/4s hooked to the hu(due to the fact they cant take as much wattage as the 6x9s)?

I'd like to get the 4 channel Sony amp considering if its not way over rated. Can it be hooked up where the 6x9s will get 50W plus and the 5 1/4s get 30W or less instead of each speaker getting 50W plus & having a chance that the 5 1/4s may blow?

Well if you are really set on that Sony amp and you really really want to get it.. what I would do is bridge the channels and have 2 channels going to each of the 6x9s and run the small ones off the head unit... oh wait.. that amp can't run 2 channel mode... wow yeah.. get something else lol. Ok man if you really want something cheap cheap ummm try this..

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_6209.html

Bridge it to put 2 channels on each 6x9, run the 5 1/4s off the head unit and call it a day.

This is the one I bought. Due to working at walmart, I used my 10% discount card & it only cost me $96. DaveDSMer: I believe you can bridge this amp. Will this amp allow me to bridge it where I can have it hooked up to just my 6x9s & leave the 5 1/4s hooked to the headunit? If not I'll just hook it up to all 4 speakers & get about 55W RMS per speaker and prey the 5 1/4s dont blow, if so I'll just get another pair, they were just cheap $40 speakers. The Max on the 6x9s is 350W & the RMS is 150W & the max on the 5 1/4s is 130W & dunno what the RMS is...so i should be ok.
