amp overheating

Well I changed the install in my car and my amp that powers my front and rear highs overheated and went into safe mode. The temp outside was around 95 to 100 degrees and I was driving for about 2 hrs. 10 minutes on the freeway with the music turned up and then it started going into safe mode. The amps are mounted in my spare tire compartment. I'm thinking about installing a fan, but my question is will a fan be enough. There is no real circulation of air because there's a cover that goes over the spare tire compartment and then on top of that there is carpeting.

ever since I installed my fans & set my gains correctly, haven't gone into protect yet...

Yeah. my gains are fine. I move the amps from the very open trunk to a tight location that doesn't get any fresh air. The amps are fine in my area but when I go out of town to hot location like 95-100 degrees and drive for a while the issue comes up. I'm just hoping that a fan is enough otherwise I'll have to create some holes in my carpet for vents along with holes int the compartment cover which I wanted to leave as factory as possible.
