amp or no amp

I have 4 pioneer 6x8s running off my HU. They sound all muddy and distorted when my subs are on. Would it make a big difference if i put an amp on them? I was th inking about the jbl 80.4

yes it would your hu is putting out distorted pwoer that amp would be fine.

it wouldn't sound much better running off that kind of amp. i've heard that jbl amps put out engine noise in the 4 channel line. why only 20watts rms to each speaker also??

An 80X4 would be about the same as a typical head unit puts out.

Define "muddiness". And where are your speakers located? If they're in the rear deck you could be getting interference from the sub. An amp won't fix that.
