There is no large load on an amplifier when no speakers are connected so i can't see how bad wiring could cause it.
DMM method restricts potential output anyways.. But if you insist on doing that method, lol, turn the head unit up to ~30-32.
I doubt you'd need gain on amp past 2 o clock position.
If you do, then start increasing it's bass eq boost thing on the amp..
I had to tune a hifonics one time.. last time i ever wanted to see one.
It could only reach optimal output with the bass eq turned almost all the way up which is something that shouldnt be used at all.
