Amp is on Protect. Could it be the battery in my car?

No, that can't be the problem unless I am not clearly understanding what you mean... Unhook everything from your amp, speaker cables, RCA cables, but the leave the power and remote and ground hooked up and turn it on, if it doesn't stay in protect you could have something else wrong, start plugging stuff in, RCA's first, then Speaker cables and turn the amp on each time until you find what is affecting the amp causing it to go to protect. If the amp goes in protect with nothing but the power hooked up to it your amp is likely messed up, may need repair/warranty.

ok i'll go try that right now

Yes, the remote wire is what tells the amp to turn on when your head unit turns on. It has to be connected or your amp won't turn on.
