amp gains

hey, im kind of new to the whole audio thing, but I was wondering if there is a different way to get the most out of your amp? I know my subs can go louder than what they are doing now but am just afraid of blowing them. I know there is a program where I put in my amps certain wattage at a particular ohm load, and then it gives me a target voltage I should look to set my gains to with a multimeter. Could anybody help me? I'm just trying to get my gains right...thanks if anyone can help me...
