I got a set of these from Premier-Audio recently and love them (Aaron was awesome to deal with). Still working on getting the front stage tuned how I like it, but it's a MAJOR improvement to what I had already. I am running a Zed Draconia with the Burr Brown to mine right now (280w per chan, bridged) and am really happy with the sound and the build quality. I got it second hand from a CAer, but would definitely recommend the Zeds. I tried it running single channel and felt that the speakers were wanting more than the 85w I had the amp dialed to.
If you are looking for a 2 channel, look at the zed deuces with the burr brown - 200w/channel @ 4 ohms. I haven't given them much more than 200w but they seem to take it without a problem. People may argue that amps don't make a difference, but the burr-brown zeds carry what I would consider a little more of a "tube-like" warmth that my eclipse 34230 (which is a really nice and clean sounding amp) I have also tried them on doesn't have. It's most pronounced in heavier rock from what I have heard. If you don't listen to a lot of rock metal or punk, may not matter to you. As a long time guitar player, I appreciate the warmth and added depth I perceive from the tubers.
Outside of the zeds, there are a fair amount of solid choices. I would definitely shoot for a minimum of 150 rms, as the germs don't do near what they are capable of with 100 or less and it's never a bad thing to have some head room built in. Zapco, DLS, helix, arc, audison, brax, any of the zed made (new zed built lanzar opti's can be found pretty often on
ebay for a good deal)...etc. Basically, these speakers will sound awesome on any good amp given enough watts.
Also - deaden the hell out of the doors if they aren't already. I ended up using about 25 ft^2 of raammat per door and two layers of ensolite on the inner panel, and about 1.5 on the rear. I tested with about 15 ft of deadener and it sounded pretty good. Added another full + spot layer on the inner panel, ensolite-gasketed the MDF baffles I made and then put two full layers of ensolite on the top of that and it was a HUGE increase in the perceived sound quality. 80-200 hz seemed to sound a LOT better (tighter, lower, no rattling or creaking).
I have also found the tweets to be great sounding. I actually have them set at the 'd' attenuation on the crossover now. In my A-arms, they were really, really loud and clear. Almost too loud for the type of music I listen to. They now perfectly awesome, crisp, clean but with NO harshness at all.
Anyway, take this all with a grain of salt - I have been out of the car audio game for almost a decade and am just now getting somewhat caught up. Hopefully my months of reading and few weeks of testing/tweaking the germs in my car will help someone just a little.
I can't wait to finish the next part of the install, getting a new sealed sub box made. Ported has been fun, but I am looking for the best reproduction and sealed seems to do it for me.
Hope this helps a little -
