Amp for a JL 12w6v2?

Hey I need some suggestions on a decent amp to power a JL 12w6v2. I was thinking about the JL 500/1, but i'd like to know if there is something just as good, if not better, for cheaper... Any suggestions?

It would depend on how much you can get that 500/1 for (whether or not you're buying used or not)

Certainly the JL amp is a more than capable performer and would treat you and a 12W6v2 just fine.

If money is tight, though, there are several options available to you.

Have a look around on eBay - have a look through the classifieds here and on other forums you might belong to - you'll want something in the range of 400-600w @ 2 Ohms for that subwoofer and that should be relatively easy to source.

now call me stupid or a noob or whatever ya wanna call me, but explain the ohms thing to me... like how do i set up and amp for 2 ohms instead of 4, and so on... i've owned quite a few systems but i never bothered to understand all that, i just hook it up and go...

Your 12W6v2 is a DVC 4 Ohm driver. Meaning Dual 4 Ohm Voice Coil - two voice coils measuring 4 Ohm nominal resistance each.

To wire them to a 2 Ohm load you'd want to wire them like so:

Both negative voice coil inputs will wire to the same negative output on your amp and likewise for the positive voice coil inputs. This is known as wiring in parallel and would be the proper method for wiring your sub to a nominal 2 Ohm load to be seen by the amp. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

You don't really set up the amp - the amp either will or will not operate safely at a given resistance load dependent on its design. You'll wire the sub(s) accoprdingly to whatever works for the amp in question.

Pretty much any monoblock amp will work @ 2 Ohms safely but some do not work well (or at all) when shown a 1 Ohm load.

Almost all (there are notable exceptions) 2 or more channel amps when in mono bridged configuration (combining 2 Output channels to create a single, larger channel of output) are not stable below 4 Ohms.
