amp distortion or craptastic speakers?

Recently got the polk DB6501's for girls car and not only am I not noticing a huge difference from the 30 dollar pioneer coax, but I'm not getting decent output at all.

They sound okay off headunit power, but they either can't handle power at all, and I'm feeding it only 50wrms or my amp is just that awful. It's an off brand amp that I had laying around to put in her car.. I wanna say, ssl?

They distort on the deck (esp) with bass turned up when it's only at 25 out of 50? Shouldn't be clipping yet, should it?
