Amp cuts out when sub hits hard

So, I recently acquired a JL 500/1 to power my also recently acquired JL 12w6. I have the Big 3 installed in my car with 0/1 gauge wire. When I have my stereo up at about 18 volume (which I'm sure means nothing to anyone, but, thats how high it is when it happens) The sub will hit hard, and immediately cut out. When I first experienced this issue, I tested and found that the amp actually turns off for a split second, then has to turn back on (The amp takes about 3 seconds to start up.) I've always had dimming problems, even when I was running my Orion HCCA 225 amp (2x25w @ 4Ohms, 1x50w @ 4Ohms bridged) running at 1 ohm (200w RMS). Is this a normal problem (the amp completely shutting off?) Thats a pretty severe voltage drop... time for a new battery?

What ohm load is the amp seeing?

the sub is configured in a 2 ohm configuration... the low ohms indicator does not come on, nor does protection

low voltage. jl has some trick circuitry in their amps and they'll shut off if the system voltage drops below a certain point. time to upgrade the electrical system.

currently there is 8 gauge being run for power and ground... could upgrade to 4 gauge... as I have the wire... just haven't put it in... don't think that will solve the problem... and i'm not putting a capacitor in there...

The 8g is part of your problem. That's too small for that power at that length of run.

You definitely don't need an HO alt as someone mentioned. You may need a new battery. But the whole problem may just be your poor 8g ground. Poor grounds are a cause of big voltage drops. I'd try switching out the power and ground with 4g (since you have the wire anyway) first and then get a new deep cycle battery if that doesn't solve it.
