Amp cut out

I have a AP1500 that worked perfect with a type r that i had for a few months. Then i let my friend have the sub and left the amp hooked up for another few months. A few days ago it started to go in and out of protect mode. I thought it might be my ground but it had worked well for all that time that i started to think that was not it. My volt meter in my truck was fine so i have no idea what the problem is. Does anyone know what this could be? Its hooked up to 0 gauge if that matters.

its going in/out of protect with no speaker hooked up? if so sounds like an internal short.

does that mean my amps on its way out? or can it be saved? sorry for all the questions, i just know the basics about car audio.
