Am I on the right track ?? Help.

I need some inspiration.

I've spent the last 2 days trying to mount my components and at first I was just going to mount them in the stock locations(mids down low in the door and tweeters in the sail panels), than I went berserk.

I have a spare complete door so I started cutting and destroying it until I came up with this Frankenstein.

Am I on the right track ???

I will be doing some more shaping and sanding (I know right now it is rough)but at the highest point only 2.5" sticks out past the door trim.

Also the tweeter will be mounted right by the mid just off axis angled at the dome light.

Will this monstrosity sound OK or should I scrap the whole thing ????

HA! I wish I had a router.

All I have is a busted up old jig saw that gets too hot to handle after cutting just one ring.

The 2 top rings were sanded by hand (used a spray can wrapped with 60 grit paper for the inside and a piece of wood for the outside).

I guess I just need reassurance that sound wise I'm not screwing things up and that I should continue or just give up and get some fiber glass.

P.S. If I do stick with these rings I will sand them baby a$$ smooth before I cover them with vinyl.

Ok, take the wooden thing you made and fit it into the stock speaker gaurd thing using lots of bondo and fiberglass and shit. You'll just have to figure out what the best way to do it is.

What I would have done is cut out the stock speaker gaurd thing, make a fiberglass mold of it and cut it so it's hallow in the center. Made a baffle to fit the speaker and angle it for the best imaging. Then I would have stretched fleece over it and fiberglassed it, bondo, then paint/carbet/vynel/whatever. This is the typical route for fitting aftermarket speakers into doors.

Good luck. I wish I had doors like that to work with, and speakers that nice too.

The wooden thingy I made is now resting comfortably at the bottom of a dumpster. I can't even believe that I wasted 2 days scratching my head and all I could come up with is that mongoloid Pinocchio.

The speaker covers pop out(so no cutting required) and the difference between the kick panels and the door trim is 2.5" which means that I can get a decent angle on the speaker without going past the kick panel.

Now, If I glass a pod thing to go over where the factory grille used to be (and cover the entire corner of the door) should I leave the back of the pod open to the door cavity or seal it up ?

I have a bunch of deadener to go into the doors.

Should I mount the tweeter up on the sail panel or would that be too far from the mid ??

I'm searching like mad through all the posts about door pods just so I can see how it should be done. Last thing I would want is a messed up install but most seam to concentrate on kick panels.
