Whether or not it's for the better or worse will depend on the vehicle.

Build a temp box, aim it to the side and see how it sounds.

well i have the whole spare tire area but i don't want to lose access to that spare tire in case i get a flat in the middle of nowhere you know

yes you can face it to the side, no it does not have to be facing the back. people face them to the back because in most cars it sounds better/gets louder.

Build a temp box, aim it to the side and see how it sounds.

from what ive read.. you have gotten plenty of help.

there is no way to tell exactly how it will sound facing the side of your trunk, in your car unless someone has the same car that has done that before. and is here to post about it.
