I have a 2006 cobalt ss with a 100sq ft fat mat. 2.5 farad pyro campacitor a boston acoustics gt-24 amp. And a 12 inch orion sub in a ported box. do u guys think im losing alot of sound from the stock head unit? and why do u think im losing alot of sound. I dont want to spend money on a head unit because i like the oem look and i like to keep my driving controls without spending a lot of money. so is it really that big of a deal with a stock head unit

What do you listen to?? MP3s or Compact Discs??

Personally I don't think you're losing any sound. I KNOW for a fact that you don't have the tuning abilities of a decent aftermarket deck but I doubt you're losing sound.

In fact, if you're losing any sound it is your stock speakers that are your weak link.

yes i used a invertor rca tied it off the back speakers. My friend did give me some 6.5s infinty reference speakers for the door so yea. idc about tuning capabilities really

Then no, you would not gain much by going with an aftermarket head unit.

Whenever I've changed into aftermarket HU's instead of OEM decks I have noticed improved sound for sure. Definitely partly because of the rms wattage sent to the speakers, I know it's small but definitely lightens them up a little.

i agree good after market unit will be improved sound. especially one that has built in crossover for high outputs. also with just about all factory hu. the have a built in volume control that once you reach a certain volume the bass starts to decrease. designed to save your speakers. gm definately has that. been like that since the 80s. i suggest new hu.

+1. I noticed a big difference between stock and aftermarket HU (With stock speakers)

I also agree that the extra power most likely was a large part of it.

Your sound quality will be much improved by an aftermarket deck... especially if your full range/sattelite speakers are amped. An aftermarket deck with rca outs might be the biggest bang for the buck improvement you could make at this point.
