I know this might be a stupid question, but what signs would you have to know that your alternator is not keeping up? I know a big voltage drop but is that the only sign? I'm trying to figure out whats wrong with my electrical. I want to make sure its my alt and nothing else before I replace it. Its a stock rewound alt btw. Guy said it did 220 amps at 1200 rpms. If anymore info is needed let me know.

Thanks guys. I pretty sure its the alt but the guy at the alt shop says this alt should be able to handle it. I will check on a more reliable alt, hopefully mechman still has alts for my car on sale. If this helps any this is whats happening: At idle the voltage at my alt drops to 12.4 full tilt and im loosing 1 volt from front to back. So if the voltage at the alt is 12.4 the voltage at the amp is 11.4.

i would look at your grounds, and your rear batteries might not be taking a charge, to loose 1 volt is not acceptable in my book.
My rear batteries are grounded to the front battery and both amps are grounded to the batteries in the back. Should I ground the batteries in the back to the chassis.

take the batteries and alt and have them tested. You'll know then what you need to do. No one here can help you beyond what's been said already.
