Alternator Max rpm

How many rpms can an alternator turn without problems? Everyone I talk to has a different opinion. Some have said 12,000 rpm max while others have said it doesn't matter. I'm trying to figure this out to get my pulley setup at the optimum point. Thanks for the help.
