alternator engage delay

Probably a stupid question but here goes. In my newer pontiac when I turn it on it reads 14.4 as soon as it turns over but my chevette will read 11-12 for a few minutes and then it kicks up to 13.8 and stays there like it should. Is this a problem with the regulator/alternator or is it normal on old beasts. I will be replacing the alt soon anyway but am curious

id say normal for older cars.

i would agree its normal....you shouldnt have a problem long as it doesnt start dropping
