Alternative to grommet for your firewall

I thought i would share this with some people since i do see people asking about running their power, especially heavy gauge, wires through their firewall. You can find these for just a handful of pennies at any place that sells electrical supplies, they should be near all the conduit or electrical boxs. I use these over rubber grommets because i don't like to lube up my power wire just to slip it throught the grommet, also getting the grommet into the firewall to begin with can be quite a task. The wire i'm using is 2/0 weld cable from http://www.weldingsupply.com

These are used to secure wiring into a junction box/circuit panel.

Basically the idea is to drill a hole just big enough to slip the threaded side through the firewall, then screw the retaining bezel on from the engine side of the firewall. I always use some clear silicone sealer around the bottom of the thread to ensure a watertight seal.

Then you simply run your wire through the hole, if you get the correct size fitting this will fit perfectly.

After you run the wire and get it secured to your battery, leaving your ground off the battery for now of course, you can add a small bead of silicone around the wire just to make sure you have a good tight seal. And last of all you screw in the retaining piece so that your wire can't be pulled loose from either side.

Cool idea. Mine is just sitting in the hole I drilled, nothing around it //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/blush.gif.99bc659ee2012b7d826165e26fb5eebe.gif I'll have to check those out.

Well, the whole purpose of the grommet is to prevent any metal-on-wire contact. The thing about this idea with the metal pieces for electrical boxes, is they don't take into account the amount of vibration that happens in cars espescially with a big sound system.

well i'm guessing that you never looked at the electrical connector......there are NO sharp egdes. I had one in my cutlass on 4 ga for like 6 years...same wire ,same connector and it never rubbed away any wire sheath nor did the fitting come loose once!!! There is a clamp that hold s the wire very securely to prevent any vibrations between the wire and the holder. I simply offered people an alternative and unless anyone can say that my method does not work as i state...i suggest keeping your "opinions" to yourself because i feel that i have all the proof that i need to say this method is extremely successful.

I just put mine through the stock rubber one on the firewall and siliconed it up so it would not leak if it ever would but didnt want any water in there.

And I have 2 runs of 1/0 gage going through it.
