Alpine vs JL: Guess who Crutchfield picks?

Well we weren't there to listen to the convo. Unless you told the guy "I want the cheapest speakers you have for my mom, who doesn't care what they sound like" then he was just doing his job. You cant expect a salesman to start by trying to sell the cheapest speakers first.

Im confident those Polks would still sound better, even with only 14 watts. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

According to the guy the JL will be MUCH cleaner. He says the JL will have MUCH better sound quality.
Which means he will get a MUCH bigger sales commission. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif Amp sonics....ppftt...put your money where it really matters....like wire and cables. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I'd agree on the PDX, though...absolutely nothing special outside the power footprint.

Dont those two comments contradict each other?

No. Stop questioning me. You know better. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

I know...it was just funny having him trying to convince me I needed some polk db'swith only about 14wrms to give it.

Also, this is for a 48 year old woman. I could tell her the brand is Captain Crunch and she would be like....oh really? how do they sound?
lol i got some Captain Type ARRGHS for sale. would she like those? I can compliment them with a nice shiney alpine amp.

I used the PDX 4.150 and really liked it. It is VERY efficient as stated. A forum member on DIYMA said he had the amp as well and then went with the JL and did notice a drastic change and said it sounded cleaner. He then went with an Audison amp and said that was even more cleaner. This guy does know his SQ to great detail, does his own tuning, and has a great sounding system, etc. I personally have no experience with the JL, and I wouldn't quite say I have SQ ears like some other guys, but I was pleased with the PDX...just thought I'd share the info with ya.

I've used all the bix box brands that feature B&O's ICE Tech....Alpine, Pioneer, Eclipse....and they all sound different. In fact, if they all sounded the same, I'd say something fishy is going on. To invest another $100 for this "SQ" feature in an amp is completely assinine.

Some amps simply have more balls under the hood and this is not always reflected in their ratings. Typically, they are companies with 10% of the marketing budget of Alpine. That leaves more money for build, testing, R&D, etc. For this reason, I'd go back and dig in my closet for a pair of Linear Power 2-channels before I'd go back to a PDX4.150.

The other aspect is proper power/level matching which hardly anyone seems to do when comparing amps. Bump that gain by 10% and you WILL have a better sounding amp, because louder, to most, sounds clearer and cleaner. This is not an improvment in quality, it's a boost in quantity.
