alpine m1005...overheating?

i have an alpine m1005 running my alpine type x 12 at 2 ohms. ive had it go into protection mode on me once, but seems to be pretty hot consitantly...is that normal? has pretty good air flow so i dont think thats what it is. i live in arizona so its already like 100 outside but i dont think that would do it either. any ideas on what it might be?
