Alpine IVA-D310 Serial Number Removed

So I bought an IVA-D310 from ebay. The listing described the unit as "Brand New. Not Refurbished" and they had good feedback so I went for it. I just received the unit and the serial number has been etched off and the stickers removed from the brain, head unit and box. However, everything looks brand new. I called the seller and questioned this and he stated he bought them direct from Alpine and they are the ones that removed the serial numbers and etched it out. Now, if something happens to the unit, I know it is not covered by any warranty but I would still like Alpine to be able to fix it. Would this be possible? Has anyone heard of Alpine removing the serial numbers?

I called Alpine and they said they don't remove any serial numbers and there could not be any repair made on the unit if it is sent to them. I guess I'll be sending the unit back...

They can fix it either way...just won't be for free.
