Alpine HU (SQ improving or declining throughout the years?)

i myself am the owner of a 9815 (2003 model) and i haven't heard many other earlier models, but i know they're notorious now for their crappy 2005 line and so im thinking if the previous 2003 models were better in SQ than the 2003 models for example?

i always wanted to listen to models such as 7949 (old school), 7998, 7995, 7892, 7894 and such... how was the sound quality of them compared to my 9815???

is the 9815/9835 considered a good SQ hu too btw?

sometimes i think my hu is kinda slow too (to jump mp3s, to eject cds, etc...)

anyone had other Alpine hus to compare to nowadays ones?

im in love with my 7894. only other ones ive heard are the 9851 but havent had much time with them so cant say too much except for the problem with them opening sometimes

I own a 9833 and it kills all,it replaced a Pioneer 9600 which totally sucked, 450.00 worth of garbage

but I also have owned an 9830 recently which is on its way back to crutchfield cause it has some display issues so I gave Kenwood a try and got a Excelon 789 which IMO sounded substantailly better and was alot nice to look at and control

The new Alpines are haveing quite a bit of mechanical issues and very few new models have 4V preouts - in other words Alpine is out the way out the door IMO

i honestly dont see how a 9833 kills a 9600 or how it's a piece of garbage.

I missed the boat on the 9815, Crutchfield was clearing them out last year for $250 or something but being a noob (still) the C/S rep told me that I needed to wire the 9815 to my battery because of the V-drive internal amp (I wish they still make them). Thought he was full of it, but a couple of C/S reps told me the same thing. That sounded way to complicated for me and buy the time I figured out I’d be OK with just the power from the wiring harness they were sold out!

But I agree with everyone, the 05 models $uck, that’s why I was picked up my 9830 for a great price.

I'm no Alpine guru by any means as I've never owned any of their HUs..but I see thread after thread with complaints of one nature or another about the newer stuff. I guess that happens when you invest the lion's share of profits on marketing instead of R&D.

My GF's car has a CDA-7875 in it that was there when she bought it. Nice freggin' deck, IMO. Sounds good and looks pretty sharp. My only beef with it is the lack of .mp3 playback. But it's got three sets of preouts so I'm hoping it'll be a decent foundation to build her a little system off of.

It would seem the newer models do not sound as good. Look at it this way, when people speak of the legendary sq alpine decks, they speak of the 7909, 7949, and sometimes the 7969.

The 9815/9835/7998, etc are never put in with those(well, there was the one guy on here who seemed to think that either the 9815 or 9835 was some kind of legendary sq deck). Then again, manufacturers in general are going for more features at a lower price. That rarely makes for a better SOUNDING deck, imo.

I can't say whats happened over the years but I did just replace a 9830 with an eclipse 5435. The SQ to me is a little better with my eclipse, but the big difference is that the eclipse sounds really good set flat, right out of the box. My 9830 took a lot of tweaking to get good and none of the factory preset eq curves were any good at all. I thought it was just the acoustics of my ride, until the 5435 sounded so good set flat. So IMO the alpine I had was OK, but I'll look elsewhere next time I'm in the market for a HU.
