Alpine 7873 vs. Newer models?

Hello,

Let me start this off by saying that I am pretty new to car audio. I was looking at getting a system about 6 months ago and a friend recommended that for the head unit I look at an alpine 7873. Obviously this model is slightly old, and while I don't have an aversion to spending a bit of cash, if I can save money all the better. From looking at the specs of the 7873 compared to the newer models I don't really see a difference other than that for the price the 7873 has 60x4 while the others listed 50x4. Has alpine made any significant developements since the 7873 was released that would make it significantly advantageous to look at a new model? If so what head unit would you recommend, I am ideally trying to stay under $400, and if under $300 even better.

Thanks for your help!
