Alpine 12" Type X

Just got done reading that article. the guy says that alpine recommended for him to build his box with 1.5 cubes. i'm having a box built with 1 cube. thats what it said in the manual. shouldn't be that big of a deal, right?
I would stick with what the guys at alpine recomend. 1 to 1.5 is a big difference. 50% more. Ported will give you more output...large sealed will give you deeper and smoother output.

more output means louder? sorry, noob here.

Yes more output means louder...however there is a certain "give and take" for different styles or "alignments" of enclosure designs. When going for SPL(sound pressure level) ported usually works well because, by design, the enclosure can be up to 3db(roughly twice as loud) louder at the tuning frequency of the port. If you build a ported box tuned to say 35hz, it's response will be significantly louder than a sealed box. The increase in sound over the sealed alignment will gradually increase, peaking at the tuning frequency of the "tuned" port, in this case 35hz. The drawback is the response of ported boxes tend to have "peaks". This means that the overall sound over the usable frequencies played by the enclosure will have a bias around the tuned frequency, which for SQ(sound quality) is considered not so desirable. Also once the subwoofer goes lower, which is to say produces bass frequencies lower than the tuning frequency of the tuned port, the enclosure no longer contributes to the control of the cone movement. The subwoofer acts as though it is in free-air operation. At that point you need to use a subsonic filter(a high-pass crossover set just above the tuning frequency of the port) or you risk serious damage to the subwoofer. A sealed box on the other hand will have less output(not quite as loud) however it almost always provides a smoother response, no real bias towards any specific frequency(assuming of course the box specs are correct). If the sealed box is too small then it can produce peaks in the response curve, without the increase in output and usually in the higher bass frequenceies. A larger sealed box will often produce a Peak in the lower bass frequencies, however it is usually a pretty smooth peak and is often preffered because it offers a little more extension (goes a bit deeper) and allows the box to be a tad louder because it increases the efficiency of the subwoofer system. I have always been an SQ guy and have always liked the sound and extension of large sealed boxes....if getting loud is your only concern then you are wasting alot of the Type Xs SQ potential. I would go with the 1.5sealed...if the tech guys at Alpine recomend it(and they should know what works the best for that sub) that's good enough for me.
