Well I re-read what he wrote after I read some of the article and I think I can better summarize what he is sayin..
European market is restricting the use of many fundamental materials used in soldering. This could cause problems with reliability due to the fact that they are unable to find a combination of or single material that performs as well as lead. He meant to say that all the new electronics that will be using these new materials will be POS's and that we will all have major reliability issues with our products.

Yes indeedy! But arent most of the boards for many of our amplifiers manufactured in places such as Korea, Japan, China??

Yeah...

I don't know, it'll be years before lead-based solder is phased out worldwide...in the interim, a good substitute will be found.

If anything, the quality of electronics is going down due to planned obsolenscence (sp...I butchered that horribly) more than anything else.

True, that would be a mighty rough transition making sure every single manufacturer was using something other than lead within 3months.
