All my subs are smoking?..

So I'm beginning to think that I have a faulty installation... I've had a pair of Solo Baric L7 15s wired to one ohm on a Memphis Pr1000... It started emitting a smell... I don't see how because 2 L7 15s = At least around 2000 rms and I had to gain about 3/4 up. Next I have 2 L7 10s wired to 2 ohms on a RF 1000bd... I have the gain to less than around half... The smell is emitting from these subs too.. 600 rms a piece = 1200 rms... Lastly I have 2 JL 10w7 wired to 1.5 ohms on the same RF... I have the gain to a little higher than half... There is a smell emitting form these also... I'm wondering what is going on with my subs!... Is this electrical? I don't see the amp having anything to do with it because this happened with two different amps. Could this have to do with the power wire? I'm not sure what gauge my power wire is... Does the speaker wire have anything to do with it? I have no clue what's going on... And I don't have too much knowledge on these things... I appreciate your help.

You're probably clipping the subs. Gain turned up 3/4 of the way really is too high for most system. That's the only reason for subs heating up like that.

On a side note, Kickers are not only known to blow, but blow up. Literally //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

I am assuming you have not scoped any of your amps, and blindly set your gains...... Last amps I had, when I scoped them, anymore then a 1/4 on the gain and they would be clipping. And you are 3 times that:laugh:

By scoping you mean what? I was under the impression that you measure how high to set your gain by the rms... L7 10s= 600 x 2 = 1200rms to RF 1000bd = 1500rms birth rate. Half way gain is 750 rms... Lol... Well I guess I was WAAAAAAAAAY ignorant on this... Someone enlighten me please : )

Brah we should meet up sometime I can give you a rundown of some basics.

Yeah you're way wrong. The gain is to match your amplifier to your head unit. With each different head unit's preout voltage, the amp will need to be set accordingly. That is most likely why you're about to blow subs all the time. You're clipping them to death.

Oh boy...... I would suggest investing in a $100 Oscilloscope, before you tear up all your equipment......... There are how to vids on youtube, that show you how to use an O-scope, you are looking for the round waves not square waves:thumbupw:

Gain knob is not a volume knob //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

You can and will still be able to get full rated rms out of your amplifiers with the gain set properly. When you begin clipping heat occurs rapidly, equipment fails.

I live in Nashville during the summer months. If you ever need something May-July, feel free to pm me.

Also I can answer questions via PM if you ever have a quick Q.

Best wishes.

Let me know when lol... I guess I will turn the gain down lol... So how would I get maximum rms from my amp? Thanks for the advice everyone.
Wire shit right and tune right. While turning gains down you also have to check bass boost on the HU and turn that to flat or 0 as well.
