Air Force

EMS will probably will be very intense. Your going to have to get almost perfect scores, because espicially in the air force, your going to have to know your shit.

Ask yourself this:

-Do you think going into an atmosphere that is upwards of 1,000 degrees, wearing nothing but some bunker gear (the stuff firefighters wear), and a SCBA with a plastic mask covering your face?

-In that atmosphere do you think you could drag out a 200lb. person using only your hands?

-Can you remember to save all the things you can while trying to find that person and drag him out?

-Can you activily put out a fire while doing that? Having hundreds of gallons of water pumping out of a hose that most likely you will be handling with one or two people?

-Are you willing to provide medicial services to someone you just dragged out? Mouth to mouth? splinting? defribulation? messing around with 3rd degree burned, bubly, black, smokey, shitty, melted skin? Blood and weird liquids are squirting all around?

Do you really want it bad? If you can't say YES, then you probably don't want to spend the resources/time to do it.

Just got out 6 months ago from my enlistment. Also attended and graduated out of Pre-Ranger and Ranger Indoc, BUDs Seal training, TACP, Marine Recon, and Pararesue PJ training as well, while still being doing Security and Special Missions for the AF. Qualified on 13 different weapons ranging from Claymore mines to MK19 40MM Automatic Grenade launcher. Good Times.

Honestly, if you're already in school I'd urge you to continue. Complete your associates, find an Air Force ROTC program and enroll. The AFROTC program will give you a little spending money and put you on track to go active duty. I'm assuming you're a father(conners' dad) and knowing that you're married--you can do much better for your family completing school and accepting a commission into the Air Force on active duty. You'll make more money and have greater opportunities to travel. I know you've expressed an interest in Fire fighting and I'm sure you can pursue the same line of work as an officer. My advice to you is to fully weigh out the good and the bad. Set a timeline that works for you and your family. Spend true quality time with your family before you make the big leap. If you are pressed and want to enter the service ASAP, make sure you get the credit for school which will give you a stripe or two, every bit helps when you have a family. Don't trust your recruiter--treat him/her like the enemy, get everything written in your contract as agreed. Look for jobs that offer a bonus that won't require you giving up an arm and a leg.

Hoxie...EOD is a great field and only for the brave at heart. I'm pretty sure the extra money is a great incentive as well. It's not the super glamorous job that Steven Segal makes it look like but it is a much needed career field. A close friend of mine who is EOD believes that his career field truly makes him "hold his life in his own hands".
