Ah... dont hate me for saying Capacitor

Rather funny indeed. Maybe I should have mentioned that I am an expirenced Car audio enthusiast for over ten years. And have worked in pro shops in the Daytona beach area for several years.
Perhaps you have heard of the Spring Break Nationals?? where much of my workmanship has been showcased over the past few years.

I undersatnd your take on cap's and I respect that. However Ive done many pro installs at my shop that Caps have proved VERY effective, Granted the Alt, batt's and wiring were as they should be first.

But wow you love to jump at anything that remotly smells like a Noob thread to you huh?

Maybe learn something about someone first dude before assuming anything
Get your head out of your ***, fella.

His post was done so for the express purpose of humor (Perhaps you've heard of it? Maybe even experienced it while you were on break from putting together all that work that's been showcased at SBN, even?) and wasn't intended as a flame on you or realistically meant as a reflection on you in any shape, fashion, or form, guy. It was simply his first impression knowing nothing more than the thread title.

Get over yourself.

Wow... I really meant what I said, Rather funny, I really did have a good laugh //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif I simply was pointing out how fast people want to spot a noob. I ment no disrespect to anyone.

speaking of first impressions... Chill out Bro

Excuse me for sending a tingling sensation up the audiosensory section of your frontal cortex which obviously has no feeling. I was merely stating that when i read the title of your thread, that was the first thought that entered my mind. Why don't you E-Bitch slap me via the net with one of your "Spring Break National Showcased installs." Asshat.

Thank you my Louisiana bretheren.

Not every car will be charging at 14.4, it does depend on the OE manufacture of the vehicle. The voltage regultor could be built to that standard and then duplicated by aftermarket. There is really no "standard" but commonly found is 14.4V.

Caps are very useful, anyone that thinks they are worthless does not understand the actual use of a cap. Are they suited for every install, no. But when used properly and/or with other upgrades, can provide for cleaner sound (a more efficient power supply will provide cleaner output)

Thanks for the helpful info, nice to see someone with useful information rather then Flaming everything/one that doesnt agree completely with there point of view

The most typical modern voltage regulators have a set point of 14.2V +-.2V @25degC. Typically they have a temp monitor, and if the max voltage is below 14.2V then it could simply be a faulty circuit in the regulator. It's very uncommon to see a regulator for a car's alternator go outside this 14.2 spec, since battery manufacturers have a set point goal.

If a capacitor helps improve sound somehow in an amplifier (high frequencies /load duty cycle), the amplifier has a really really crappy DC power conversion. You'll be hard pressed to find an amplifier built in the last 6-7 years which qualifies for this.

Caps do have their place in car audio installation but I do have to agree with those that " say they are useless" in a sense. Under MOST situations you will not gain as much as you would think from using a cap. Caps do come in handy when you first upgrade the BATT and ALT and the neccesary wireing to make for the most effectiveness. Provided that all these things are taken care of first and you only have a slight and I do mean slight dicrepancy in your voltage then a cap is a good choice. The problem is that many people think that a cap is the cheap and easy fix and in most cases the problem can be fixed with a lot less headaches than would normally come with a cap and generally within a nominal cost difference.

Bottom line is that Caps do have their place but it is not as big a place as a lot of inexperianced people would like to think.

14.4 V is by no means a hard and fast rule. GM has used a 13.8V regulator and other car makers use whatever makes sense for the car in question. Basically anything above battery discharge voltage is providing input and not every amp makes appreciably more power (rarely even close to audible) with 14V compared to 12.

I get 14.7 out of mine, 14.3 at the battery charging, 13.7 at idle, and 15.3 at the trunk battery. I dont need a cap //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
How are you making voltage between the front and back of your car?//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/uhoh.gif.c07307dd22ee7e63e22fc8e9c614d1fd.gif

I use an 800 for stiffening purposes....

And this subject has been covered over and over...

It's possible your old hifonics lacks appropriate internal capacitance, or the capacitors are losing their capacity over the years, but most amps simply don't need an external capacitor of any sort.

It only takes a fraction of a second for a dip in the line voltage to trigger your alternator exciter, charge the brushes, and create the increased current, so adding tons of added external capacitance is just silly, and would simply be performing the same function as adding a smaller or second battery closer to the amplifier, which is merely to provide an ultra-low resistance source of extra power during sudden spikes (a function a low-esr battery will perform just as well as a cap)

Do some searching, there's plently of information about both correct, and incorrect useage of capacitors, as well as plenty of uninformed nonsense on both sides of the argument, so there's no need to have another debate.
