if i want to run an active setup, can i just get an electonic crossover from a company like audio control or do i need a new head unit also. i have an eclipse cd3000 headunit.

A crossover is a crossover. Whether it is in the HU or an outboard unit doesn't matter. If your HU has the crossover functions that you need, there is no need for an outboard unit or a new HU. If it doesn't have what you need, you will need either a new HU or an outboard unit; one or the other, not both.
