passive is where the speaker wires come out of your amps and go to a crossover which then seperates the frequencies to you woofer and tweeter, active is where the signal is split before it gets to you amp ie your headunit or an outboards crossover the rcas going to the amp are all crossed over to certain frequiencies and you have a seperate amp for tweeters and one for mids/woofers. Basically

BASICALLY

I was just trying to explain it so he would understand it.

It give yo more flexibility to change out speakers and crossover points but costs more because of processing, amp power, speakers, etc.

The amount of amps you have has nothing to do with 'active'. It's exactly what ultimate said. Your unit gives a different RCA signal for your high, mid and low. Passive only gives you 2 signals, high and low. It also gives you more cross over points and higher Db slopes than passive.
