I believe the battery is primarily for reserve power.

When the bass hits, and your alternator cannot react quick enough to supply the power, your lights will dim and your electrical system will be strained until your alternator finally reacts to the change.

Your battery(s) supply the current while this transition happens. Sometimes the alternator cannot supply all of the power needed (lets say on very hard hitting bass notes) then the extra current will come from the battery(s).

So the amount of reserve power you should have depends on the current you need to supply.
