About Subwoofer Tuning

Ok. Before 100 people start flaming me...I AM NEW TO THIS.

Just thought I would get that out there, because I've seen quite a bit of it.

But I was wondering if anyone here would know what hz to tune my ported sub box to.

I listen to Hip-Hop and Drum & Bass primarily. And will be using 2 AQ HDC315's wired to 2 AQ2200D amps.

Any ideas? Any and all help greatly appreciated.

not sure about those subs. the manual probably says. i find that a good standard tuning is 32HZ. some kickers perform better at 38-40. depends on the sub.

most common tuning is right around 30-36 hz. I usually tune to 33-34hz

since you are new to this. do you realize that 2 15's need 8-10 cubes ported? you may get away with 6, but alot of 15's won't sound great in that little space.

Those subs are similar in tuning to the DD's...in that they like 40Hz...

My 18" Nightshade seems to love my 27Hz box...but I wanted it too hit the lows crazy and it does...but on some of the higher notes...it just fades out...

Id tune to 38 hz in your case .44hz is a bit high and wont be as "musical" compared to a 36-40hz tuning(recommended for the HDC3) . Those subs will do very well in 8-9 cu/ft ported also .

I second this, the AQ subs like high tuning. DJ recommends 36-38 for SQ and around 40 for SPL. I'm going to do a 37 HZ box.

8.5cubes @ 38Hz is a great over-all set up for hitting low and getting loud and can sound good on all kinds of music.

My current HDC's are in 3cubes each and it works, but is way too small as they're very peaky.

Alright. Rethinking it to about 8.5cubes @ 37-38hz. Probably going to go with 37.

Ok here's another couple of newb questions.

What is SQL and SQ?

and....

What is LFE?

SQL = sound quality (loud)

SQ = sound quality

LFE = any tone below or at 20hz.

if referring to the subsonic filter. It cuts off frequency at a given point. (set for 5-10hz below tuning)

What is SPL?

And advantages/disadvantages of ported -vs- bandpass subwoofer boxes.

Just trying to get some background info so my sub system will perform at its maximum potential.
