1/2 should be fine, just make sure you have enough clearance to put the trim piece back on.

i found everything i was looking for at lowe's except for egg crate foam and non hardening clay. where do i get that stuff?

Egg crate foam can be had from Parts Express

Oh and if you put MDF in your doors it should be treated with resin or somethin

A fiberglass resin will do man, I dunno about waterseal

MDF is real succeptable(sp?) to water damage man

One drop of water and it'll bulge, and it can also grow mold

x2, a guy i work with had a blowthrough in an s10, and his weatherseal between the cab and cap leaked, and the box grew like one of those pills you put in water, and it expands into a huge sponge-character
