9887 tuning ?

a yes im looking at the alpine cda-9887, im going to be running a passive crossover setup to my componet speakers, runing my head unit to a kicker 4 channel amp, then to the crossovers to each set of componets, then to the speakers, now my question is, is how would i go about tuning my system, will i be able to use the headunit to control the eqs of the stereo, or will i have to use the amp to set the eqs? ill also have a mono sub amp to my subs, thanks

Personally, i wouldnt buy the 9887 if you aren't gonna be running active. You can save some $ and go with a 9886 and still have a decent equalizer.

so the 9886 would be a better choice, is there much difference in the two? so the eq on the head unit would be pointless since im running passive

no, the eq and crossover settings still control your sound. you can use the ones on the hu or the ones on the amp. i would use which ever one was a better quality product.

Not so much the equalizer, but the fact that it has a 3 way crossover built into it, You are paying an extra what, 100 or so bucks for those crossovers.

The equalizer is still pretty good on the 9886. I personally own a 9887 and love it, but then again, I spent the money on it to run active

There is just more fine tuning when you are active. It isn't necessarily harder if you know what to tune.

x2 on everything alxmlr said. Get a 9886 if your gonna run passive, unless you plan on going active in the future. I believe the only difference between the two units is the 9887 has the built in crossovers and time correction. Even the time correction would be useless unless you were going to at least bi-amp your passive crossovers.

Personally I would go for the 9886 for your case and use the HU's EQ to fine tune things.

the 9887 is basically a 9886 with the pxa-h100 built in. some other features as well like a 24 bit DAC. there are also some cosmetic differences. 349.99 for 9886, 149.99 for pxa-h100 or 449.99 for 9887. seems like if you want the tuning features like a 5 band parametric eq or 7 band graphic eq, time alignment, or the ability to run active later on, the 9887 is worth the extra hundred. otherwise, down the road, you've got to spend an extra 150. i'd get the 9887 if i wanted an alpine.

all prices are from crutchfield. i didn't feel like shopping around at unauthorized dealers to find other prices for compairison reasons. i support authorized dealers because i used to work for one.

Umm yeah it's a 2 band with loudness. I am trying to figure out what in peoples' eyes makes that 'good' in comparison to any other SQ unit. I had one. Aside from 4 volts/channel and imprint capability there really wasn't much there feature-wise that I couldn't have gotten for 120 bucks at WALMART. Active or no the 9887 has a 5/7 band EQ and time alignment. When properly adjusted just these two things can have a tremendous effect on your sound. And if you learn about going active later and decide you want to try it you'll already have a head unit.
