96 corvette with Alpine headunit problems

My 96 corvette came with an Alpine CDA 9831? player already installed when i bought 3ish years ago.

The Problem:

the antenna doesn't rise when i start the car(which it should if the radio is on). IF it doesn't come up at start up it usually is up within 5min of driving.

It used to do this 1 out of every 30 starts.

about 1 week ago it started doing it 1 out of every 5 starts. Now it does it every time.

I'm pretty sure this is something electrical or headunit related. I just dont' know how i can narrow it down and figure out the problem.

1. How can i get the head unit out without the tools that came with it? Does it even need special tools?

2. Any possible reasons for this?
