Speaker wire never has to be as large as the amp power wire, and not only because it's in a shorter length. It's also because the amp converts the low voltage/high amperage DC power into higher voltage/lower amperage AC power. Wires can handle voltage much easier than amperage, hense you can use smaller wire.
I believe this is how it works: if you have 60 amperes going in your amp at 14 volts it'll output, if at 2 ohms, about 40 volts at 20 amperes (it'll be slightly less because of DC to AC conversion inefficiency), which is about 800 watts.
