8" mids or two sets of 6.5's?

I'm looking to be loud and clear. My initial idea was to do two sets of 6.5's in the front doors with some Titanium tweets all running active. Someone threw the idea of doing a set of 8" mid's instead. Would the 8's be louder? I currently have the CDT HD6's and was going to buy another set. Shoot me some opinions and facts!

I just got a Dayton reference 8in 4ohm speaker. My next build is gonna be pretty similar to OP's by the sound of it. It is going to be a while before I get to test it out. (Gonna buy a new one when the time comes) Should I expect the same from the Dayton as the Selenium described above?

If this is an active setup run the 8's with the 6.5's. The 8's will give you a farther response and as long as you keep them crossed well with the 6.5's it should sound nice.

You're assuming he has the abilitly to run 4way active, probably doesn't.

8" selenium will kill the cdt mids in overall loudness and clarity is very good on them. I switched to PA mids a few years ago and will never go back....

Dayton Audio RS28A-4 1-1/8" Aluminum Dome Tweeter 275-130

Power handling: 100 watts RMS/150 watts max (with appropriate crossover) • VCdia: 1-1/8" • Impedance: 4 ohms • Re: 3.0 ohms • Frequency range: 1,300-20,000 Hz • Fs: 592 Hz • SPL: 91 dB 2.83V/1m, 88 dB 1W/1m • Dimensions: Overall diameter: 4-1/8", Cutout diameter: 3-1/4", Depth: 1-3/4".

what about using a tweeter like this. The 8" woofer goes up to 2K. so wouldn't you still be getting the full spectrum of audible sound?

Dayton will have more midbass and a little fuller sound, but output will not be close to the selenium. PA stuff is just so much louder, but doesn't have as full of a sound, best way I can describe it.

Guy with 8 15's in a diamond tunnel has a bunch of the Daytons in his ride and they don't keep up at all. I have 4 6.5" PE PA mids in each door and bullets in the A-pillars and they easily keep up with 55+ on bass.

the dayton 8" is really designed to be used in a 3way set up, bad cone breakeup around 1.5Khz per tests I've seen, either zaph or on diyma

let's let the OP catch up and weigh in with his thoughts.

fact: dual door mids will result in comb filtering at the listening position. that is why i recommend a passive low pass on the nearest woofer.

fact: dual door mids complicates T/A

opinion: run the midbass in modified doors and midrange in the kick and you get the best of both.
