Hi

Another noob question...trying to put together a SQ system in my truck...I was wondering if Zapco 500.1 can drive 8ohm woofer ? Could you tell me how much power can I expect from the amp @ 8 ohm load ..I know the 1/2 ratio with the doubling the impedance ...but this one is rated at 500@2ohm and 360@4ohm...it's not really going down in 1/2 ?? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Any idea what would it do @8ohm ? Is it safe to do it ?

Thanks

Usually 8ohm drivers are more efficient than 4 ohm ones. If the amp's 4 ohm power is sufficient to drive 4ohm front speakers, it will do well on 8 ohm. If you are using a DMM to set the gain, use the same voltage that you would for 4 ohms, it should comfortably do that. The amp will run cooler to boot.

8 ohms to any amp is bliss.
Also, as helotaxi said, consider the efficiency of the driver....especially with a sub.
And how do we get an accurate spec on subwoofer efficiency to even consider? The 1khz spec manufacturers list? I dont think so. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif
Don't assume an 8ohm driver is more efficient.

Would you seriously just shut up? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

But I agree with what you're saying. I just think you're a dipshit. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

It's safe to do it, but why on earth would you want to?

To the OP: just post which sub you'll be running and we can help you figure it out.

No, it's not dangerous. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

If it has the response you are looking for, why not?
Squeezing more wattage out of an amp is hardly everything when it comes to audio.
Agreed. But voluntarily cutting your amps power output and eliminating several dB's of headroom isn't exactly everything either.
Obviously if the driver in question was quite efficient, it could work just fine. But I most certainly did not like the results of clipping when I tried it (even thought the driver I used had the response I was looking for)... the sound of a subwoofer clipping most definitely is not everything when it comes to audio.

If we are talking about 'headroom' then presumably you are discussing amplifier distortion output levels. And of course, lowering speaker impedance will inherently increase amplifier distortion output.
Headroom is good and all, but Id not recommend driving the amplifier to a lower impedance in an attempt to achieve it.

Hey

Thanks for all the replies....why do I want to try that ? Well ...found OEM Dynaudio driver that is used in their HT subwoofer line and in the Totem Shaman speakers...they are awesome ...fast , tight and detailed....I'm not looking to break any SPL records...just trying to get a little bass to complement front stage...the only thing ...it's 8ohm ...but 90db should help a little..

Thanks
